Homeopathy is a scientific method of treating individuals through the use of safe, natural, non-drug medicines (called remedies) that stimulate the individual's own healing abilities. Homeopathy treats the whole person rather than focusing on the sickness or the diseased part. The word homeopathy is taken from the Greek "homeos" (similar) and "pathos" (suffering). Thus, homeopathy means that a substance which can cause certain symptoms in a healthy person can be made into a medicine which will cure those same symptoms in a sick person. This is also referred to as the Law of Similars.
Homeopathy is not new. The above stated Law of Similars was suggested by Hippocrates in 400 B.C. and was reintroduced formally in 1796 by a scholarly German physician, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. Disenchanted with the medical science of his day, he instead dedicated his life to studying healing arts from around the world and ultimately evolved the principles of homeopathy as we know them today. There is in every human being that which Dr. Hahnemann called the vital force, or life energy, which does the healing when we are sick. Although homeopathic medicine is more prevalent in Europe and India, our country is experiencing a revival of this highly effective medical specialty. Physicians who practice homeopathy have completed their professional degrees. They then study homeopathy as a post-graduate medical specialty.
Homeopathic medicines are scientifically prepared from plants and minerals and are identical to those used by Dr. Hahnemann over 150 years ago. With homeopathic medicines, less is more. The medicines are taken in a highly diluted, but potent form which makes them safe to take and free of side effects or allergic reactions. Homeopathic medicines are different from drugs in that they are non-toxic, do not suppress symptoms, nor are they habit forming.
